Generally applying to most HVAC devices used for space heating or space cooling, the heat pump uses the same basic refrigeration-type cycle used in an air conditioner or refrigerator. Heat pumps generally draw heat from cooler places, such as external air or from the ground, and release heated air into the air-conditioned space.
